Get into the Groove in Augusta

Today, at 7 p.m., the Maxwell Theatre at Georgia’s Augusta University will play host to Whit Stillman’s The Last Days of Disco (1998), following afternoon screenings of the two other comedies, Metropolitan (1990) and Barcelona (1994), that make up his beloved trilogy of love among the overeducated. The director’s typically witty Last Days sets down in very-early-eighties Manhattan, where a pair of recent college grads (Kate Beckinsale and Chloë Sevigny) spend their days working entry-level publishing jobs and their nights on the city’s glamorous—but waning—disco scene. The film might mark the passing of an era, but today’s screening won’t spell the end of the university’s Stillman festivities: on the 26th, the man himself will pay a visit to the school for its Writers Weekend, where he’ll take the stage following a screening of his most recent feature, the sharp-tongued Jane Austen adaptation Love & Friendship (2016).
