A Double Dose of Death

No one beats the Grim Reaper at his own game. In a deathly double feature premiering tomorrow on the Criterion Channel on FilmStruck, you’ll see him facing off against some wildly different opponents: first, the chess-playing, God-questioning medieval knight (Max von Sydow) in Ingmar Bergman’s masterpiece The Seventh Seal, then the pair of clueless Valley boys (Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter) in Pete Hewitt’s sublimely stupid sci-fi comedy Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey. Traveling from heaven to hell, from highbrow to lowbrow, this final entry in the Channel’s monthlong celebration of Bergman’s hundredth birthday—in which we’ve paired some of his greatest works with films that bear their influence—shows us just how long of a shadow the Swedish master cast on the world of cinema. Above, check out our new trailer, created by Jonathan Keogh.
