Monterey Pop in North Carolina

This week, the RiverRun International Film Festival in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, is hosting a screening of D. A. Pennebaker’s 1968 film Monterey Pop. Playing as part of From the Archives: Rock on Film, a music-themed sidebar to the festival, Pennebaker’s iconic documentary captures a seminal weekend during 1967’s Summer of Love, when some of the greatest rock musicians in the world gathered for the first (and last) Monterey International Pop Festival. With his trailblazing vérité style, Pennebaker creates a transfixing time capsule of a generation, featuring such ’60s pop heavyweights as Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Simon & Garfunkel, and Otis Redding. You can see the film for free on Saturday, and in the meantime, check out Jimi Hendrix’s famed seven-minute performance from the film below.
