Introducing Sundays and Cybèle
Sundays and Cybèle—Serge Bourguignon’s searing French drama about an unorthodox relationship between a traumatized war veteran and a young girl—was not an easy film to market. Its subject matter is difficult, and the complexity of its characters’ lives and motivations is tough to convey snappily. But the original trailer for this best foreign-language Academy Award winner does a great job of expressing the film’s emotional tenor while not spoiling the film’s plot, and smartly uses the text of a New York Times review to do the heavy lifting. The trailer, which you can watch below, also affords glimpses of the film’s extraordinary cinematography by Henri Decaë (Elevator to the Gallows, The 400 Blows, Purple Noon).
