Perfect Timing
The most iconic gag of Harold Lloyd’s career—and one of the most indelible images of all of silent cinema—is the limber funnyman dangling from a clock on the side of a high building in Safety Last!. It is the centerpiece of an amazing extended climax that finds Lloyd scaling an entire department store. The hilarious and perilous-looking stunt was partly achieved by dazzling camera effects. In this clip from a supplement on our release of the film, author John Bengtson and visual-effects expert Craig Barron lay out how this unforgettable trick was accomplished.
