Happy Birthday, Danielle Darrieux!

The intense and classically beautiful movie star Danielle Darrieux, Max Ophuls’s muse in many films, including The Earrings of Madame de . . ., turns ninety-five today. She is one of France’s longest working actors: her first screen credit was in the 1931 film Le bal, and she remains active in film and television today (in the past decade, she’s appeared in François Ozon’s 8 Women and the animated film Persepolis, among other things, and she starred in the 2010 made-for-TV C’est toi c’est tout). The striking photo above is from Ophuls's Le plaisir, in which she plays a gruffly tender bordello madam.
