  • Last weekend, in conjunction with his new album, Blonde, musician and noted cinephile Frank Ocean released a limited-edition zine titled Boys Don’t Cry, which featured a list of his favorite films. Chungking Express, Eraserhead, Blood Simple, Solaris, Paris, Texas, and The Friends of Eddie Coyle are just a few of the titles that made the cut.
  • For the New York Times, Manohla Dargis discusses the obsolescence of celluloid and the necessity of film preservation. “What happens to an art when its foundational medium disappears? We don’t yet know, because it’s happening right now. If you care about movies, you should be wondering.”
  • For Little White Lies, David Jenkins speaks with the great Isabelle Huppert. “My main and only concern is to be as truthful as possible,” she says. “Most people act and you can tell they’re acting. I want to be as close as possible to what I think reality is.”
  • The BFI has posted a list of ten great films set in Tokyo, including Abbas Kiarostami’s Like Someone in Love, Akira Kurosawa’s Stray Dog, and Yasujiro Ozu’s Tokyo Story.
  • Turner Classic Movies has announced the theme of the eighth annual TCM Festival: “Make ’Em Laugh: Comedy in the Movies.”

  • For her music column, Deep Cuts, over at Film Comment, Margaret Barton-Fumo explores the film scores of musician Scott Walker, who cites cinema as “his ‘first love’ and the reason why he continues to ‘think in images’ when he writes music.”
